"College Students Who Volunteer on the Weekends"

The prototypical customer in my segment of young and middle-aged people who are looking to improve/maintain their health is best represented by college students with philanthropic tendencies. They volunteer on the weekends, or even during the week for a few hours. They call themselves artistic, advocating for the arts either because they genuinely believe it or because they think it's trendy. They value the opinion of others highly. They are constantly looking for validation from others, but still try to pretend to not care how others see them.

My prototypical customer is easy to spot. They wear thrifted clothes or clothes from Goodwill the majority of the time, as they don't believe in fast-fashion. When they're not wearing the above-mentioned clothes, they're outfitted in athleisure. They love to dress in comfort colors. On a normal day, they won't look extremely put together, but they also won't look super rough. Beyond their immediate physical appearances, they're likely to be seen getting into or out of their Prius or Hybrid car. If they weren't able to manage to get a full or partially electric car, they likely have a compact car that's a Toyota or a Honda, or no car at all. The color of the car varies. It may be grey, blue, silver, white, black, or whatever color they managed to get with the car that they have.

Diving deeper into who they are as people, these individuals are approximately 18 to 26 years old. They feel young, but not childish. They are trying to get used to being on their own and enjoy newfound freedom, but aren't yet ready to be fully responsible for themselves or others. They squirm at the thought of adulthood, as they're not willing to give up their "best years" just yet. In parallel with this, they don’t have children. They either aren't ready for children or they don’t plan on having children altogether.

In terms of what they do in their free time, they're pretty basic. They like to take pictures of their food every time they go out to eat, so, they can post about it. They like to visit art museums and go out with friends with the primary purpose of taking pictures. If they listen to podcasts, they listen to ones mostly about serial killers, as those are some of the most popular. Their favorite childhood books are from the Harry Potter series, but they don't get around to reading as much now. Their taste in TV shows are also pretty basic, as they like Friends, The Office, and Parks and Rec along with coming of age movies or works that are considered 'films' rather than just 'movies.' They like to listen to alternative music, although they are familiar with popular music as well.

I have little in common with the customer avatar aside from age. I fall within the age range of my customer avatar and happen to also wear clothes from Goodwill, but mainly for the reason that it is economical. In general, I don’t have many commonalities with my customer avatar; however, for the things I do have in common with the avatar, I don’t think they were coincidences. As a college student myself, it makes sense for me to be within the age range of my avatar. Additionally, a characteristic of being a college student is not having a whole lot of disposable income, so, buying clothes from Goodwill or thrift stores makes sense financially. The little bit of overlap that I do have with my customer avatar makes sense.

  1. Kira, I think that you described your customer avatar very well. By your descriptions, it definitely paints a picture of who the prototypical customer would be. I think you have a very good idea of who your target audience is but the way you were able to describe them with sufficient detail. Additionally I believe this is very useful to your idea since you will easily be able to identify your target audience.
